The experience of being in Himalayas surrounded by snow-clad peaks, numerous streams and mystic lakes makes Source of the Ganges and Tapovan a truly fabled trek. Trekking the Gomukh-Tapovan trail via source of the Ganges trek is about exploring the deep-rooted sentiments of Hinduism, understanding the significance of the river Ganges and witnessing natures marvel at its best. The Holy River Ganges is the most sacred river in the Hindu religion with its source at the Gomukh glacier, considered as one of the holiest places for Hindus who come here to witness the birth of Mother Ganga, Gangotri is also the point from where the water taken back for religious ceremonies is said to be the purest! The trek takes one to Gomukh glacier (cows mouth), the mythological source of the River Ganges, which is at the snout of the Gangotri glacier. While trekking to Gomukh is easy enough, our more experienced trekkers would fancy doing the Gomukh-Tapovan corridor and hitting the base of legendary Shivling! As you weave your way from Gangotri to Tapovan, every twist in the trail reveals another stunning snowclad Himalayan giant. The campsite at Tapovan must rate as one of the most awe-inspiring spots in the world, as you gaze at the Shivling peak rising like a great deity before you and not to mention the twin Bhagirathi peaks & Mt.Meru.

After breakfast we drive to Gangotri. The drive is along the right bank of Bhagirathi through a narrow & high gorge. The Ganga finds her source near Gangotri at Gaumukh, about 18 kms away in the Gangotri glacier. Literally a Cow's mouth, from where it gushes out with a shout in the glacier. Ganga the stream of life, is a faith by herself. According to Hindu belief this daughter of heaven came down to earth as a reward for King Bhagirath's penance of several centuries and Gangotri is the place where she descended. Here the river is worshipped as a deity. The shrine of Gangotri nestles at the dreamy height of 3140 metres. The temple to the river goddess Ganga which is built here is said to have been built by the Gurkha commander Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century and later rebuilt by the Maharaja of Jaipur. The Gauri Kund waterfalls flow here. The Aarti held at the shrine in the evenings is both a spiritual & a mentally fascinating vision. Overnight halt at Gangotri.
Day 02: GANGOTRI to CHIRBASSA (3600m) – 9 kms trek
An easy walk (9 kms trek) along a wide trail initially passes through dense deodar forests before emerging into the wide barren and denuded valley. It then carries on to a small oasis like pine forest at Chirbassa, literally meaning -the abode of pines. Overnight halt at Chirbassa in tents.
Day 3: CHIRBASSA - BHOJVASA (3792 M / 12440 ft) - TREK
The trail gradually flattens out and suddenly dips near Bhojvasa. Camp on a grassy meadow beside the Bhagirathi. The area gets its name from the bhoj leaves that were used as paper during the ancient times. Overnight camp at Bhojvasa.
Day 04: BHOJVASA – GAUMUKH (3890 M) – TAPOVAN (4463 M / 14640 ft) - Trek
Continuing along the pilgrim route. And following the well marked route, the trail then curves, to unfold a breathtaking view of wild flowers studded meadows crowned by the Bhagirathi group of peaks. Gaumukh, here the holy Ganga gushes out of the snout of the Gangotri glacier. Shivling mountain (6540 m), stands tall like a sentinel while the Bhagirathi I, II and III tower above the glacier giving the photographer ample opportunity for many a good pictures on a clear day! Continuing further, the trail leaves its predictable course through the terminal moraine and cuts across the Gangotri glacier and climbs steeply up the grassy slopes to the vast valley of Tapovan. The vast meadows strewn with wild flowers are situated at the base of Shivling. The Bhagirathi peaks now appear almost within touching distance. The camp is set in the picturesque grassland surrounded by many a bubbling spring.
